Concrete is easily one of the most durable building materials out there. It’s used in the foundations of buildings for a reason, and it’s often even used, along with steel, to hold up massive buildings like skyscrapers. When you look at the pictures of the destruction of the latest hurricanes, incredibly powerful storms that impacted millions of people, some of the only structures left standing are the ones made of concrete. A good concrete driveway can last for decades with minimal maintenance. You can’t say the same for many other materials.
That being said, there often comes a time when it’s time to replace concrete driveways & walkways. For example, maybe you moved into a house that was built 50 years ago and the previous owner didn’t maintain the concrete driveway to the garage or the walkway up to the house. If that’s the case, then eventually you’re going to need to replace it. At least that’s what you’re going to have to do if you want your house to look its best. Here are three signs that it might be time to get new concrete driveways and walkways.
The first sign that you might need to consider contacting a residential concrete contractor in Denver, or wherever you happen to live, is if you’re starting to notice a number of large cracks and breaks in the concrete. If you see a bunch of cracks that shouldn’t be there, it’s quite possible that you’ll need to replace the entire concrete driveway or walkway. These cracks generally occur over time, and they’re caused by the natural wear and tear of the elements. Most cracks start when it snows and water falls into tiny little cracks on the concrete. Over night that water freezes and expands, which causes the concrete to expand and break. If you’re starting to notice a large number of cracks, odds are that the next time it snows those cracks are only going to get larger. It’s all about your tolerance for cracks, but once they start they tend to get much worse over a short period of time.
Another sign that it might be time to contact a concrete contractor like The Concrete Company is if you’re starting to see little plants growing through the concrete. Plant life on your concrete is a bad sign, because it means that the plant grew through the concrete. There’s only one way for the plant to do this, and that’s through a crack. Either the crack was already there and the plant grew through it, or the plant itself caused the crack. Either way, once a plant does this the crack is there, and you’ll either have to repair the crack or replace the concrete altogether.
The final sign that it might be time to replace your concrete driveway and/or walkway is if you notice that it’s starting to sink. Sometimes contractors don’t do a good job of solidifying the ground underneath the driveway or walkway, and when this happens it can start to sink into the ground. In most cases where this happens, the concrete has to be removed, the ground solidified, and new concrete poured over the top. If the problem isn’t addressed, the concrete will only sink deeper and deeper.
